Thesis Book

This is both a design project and a research project — the thesis book documents original scholarly work while itself being a designed artifact. The challenge was designing a system that could hold complex academic content — long-form text, footnotes, images, charts, and citations — while remaining visually compelling and readable.

The central design question: how does the form of a book embody its argument? Rather than treating design as a neutral container, I worked to make every typographic and structural choice expressive of the thesis content itself.

The type system was built around two typefaces: a classical text face for body copy and footnotes, and a contemporary display face for headings, pull quotes, and section markers. The scale was developed using a modular ratio, ensuring consistent hierarchy across all text levels.

Particular attention was paid to footnote typography — a frequently neglected element in academic publishing. The footnote system uses a smaller size but maintains the same x-height ratio, ensuring notes read as related but subordinate to the main text.

The grid system uses a six-column structure on a spread, with a generous outer margin for annotations and a narrower gutter. This asymmetric approach creates visual tension that keeps the reader engaged across long passages of text.

Four layout templates handle the main content types: full-text spreads, image-heavy spreads, chapter openers, and end matter. Each template was designed to feel coherent with the others while serving its specific content function.

The color system is restrained: a warm off-white stock, a single accent color derived from the thesis subject matter, and black. Images are treated with a consistent duo-tone effect that ties them visually to the text.

The design went through three significant iterations before reaching its final form. Early layouts were rejected for being too sparse; a mid-process version was too decorative. The final system found its balance in the third iteration — confident but never showy.

The book was printed offset on an uncoated text stock with a case-bound hardcover. Print production required careful pre-press work: bleeds, color profiles, preflight checks, and printer coordination. Proofs were reviewed and adjusted before final print run.

The thesis book is the project I'm most proud of — not because it's the most visually striking, but because it demanded the most synthesis. Designing a book about my own research required me to hold the designer and the writer simultaneously, and to trust that restraint is a form of expression.

What I learned: Long-form editorial design is fundamentally about rhythm — how the reader moves through a text, when they rest, when they're surprised. The grid is a score; the pages are measures; the reading is the performance.
